Lord, my work is to arrive at the worst moment of a stranger's life and hold it steady — a stopped heart, a wrecked car, a frightened child, a parent I have to look in the eye. Your word calls You the God of all comfort, who comforts us so that we can comfort others; but some days I pour out comfort I no longer have left to give. Meet me in that emptiness. Steady my hands on the next call and clear my head when seconds decide everything. Hold the ones I reach in time and the ones I do not, and take the images that follow me off shift and into my sleep. Remind me that I am allowed to need care as much as I give it, and send me someone I can tell the truth to about this. I cannot save everyone, and I will stop pretending I should be able to; comfort the one who keeps trying to comfort everyone else. Amen.
