Lord, the surgery is over, and my wife is here — sore and tired and safe — and I am only beginning to unclench after holding my breath for so long. Your word says, return to your rest, for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you; teach the two of us how to rest in this fragile after. Close the wound they had to make, and keep infection and setback far from her through these tender days. Give me patience for a healing that will move slower than either of us wants, and the gentleness to care for her without smothering her. While the pathology is still unknown, keep dread from seeping into the quiet between us. You have brought us further than I believed we could go; let us set our weariness down before the One who has dealt so bountifully, even here. Amen.
