Lord, the chemotherapy is hard on my son, and there are days I would pull it out of him and into myself if I only could. I cannot, and the helplessness is its own grief. Your word asks whether a mother could forget her nursing child — and even if she could, You will not forget him. Remember my boy in the worst hours, the ones I cannot fix with any amount of love. Bear the sickness I would bear for him. Keep some spark of himself alight through the grey, flattened days. And when I am undone by watching, remind me that he is held by a love even fiercer and more constant than mine. I would take his place, Lord; since I cannot, do not for one moment forget my son. Amen.
A prayer for you
Prayer for My Son During Chemotherapy
There may be days of treatment when you would give anything to suffer it for him; love feels exactly that helpless.
“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you!”
