Lord, tomorrow my mother has her surgery, and the prayer that keeps surfacing in me is the one she surely once whispered over my own childhood sickbeds: into Your hand I commend her. For most of my life she was the one who waited up, who sat by the bed, who did the worrying — and tomorrow those roles finally, fully trade. I do not know how to be the strong one for the woman who first taught me what strength looks like, so I am leaning hard on You instead. Be with her in the place I am not allowed to follow, and give her back to us when it is done. And in the long wait, hold the frightened child I become whenever it is my mum who is unwell. Into Your hand I commend my mother, Lord — exactly as she once commended me. Amen.
