Lord, tomorrow my grandmother goes into surgery, and she suddenly seems so small and frail to me, though she has been a giant in my life. Your word paints the picture I am clinging to: that You cover her with Your feathers, that under Your wings she takes refuge, that Your faithfulness is her shield. Be that shelter over her tomorrow, gentler and surer than any I could give. Steady the surgeons. Carry her tender body through, and bring her back to a family that is not finished needing her. While we wait, tuck the whole anxious lot of us under those same wings. She spent a lifetime making everyone else feel safe; let her feel utterly safe now, held by the God she taught us all to trust. Amen.
