Lord, the chemotherapy is wearing my grandfather down, and there is something almost unbearable about watching the man who once carried me on his shoulders grow too weak to carry himself. If I could take the whole weight of it onto my own back, I would not think twice. I cannot — but Your word says You carried Your people as a man carries his son, and that is exactly what I am asking now: carry my grandfather the way he once carried all of us. Lift what his body can no longer lift. Be strength beneath a frame that has bent under so many years and burdens. Keep his spirit and his dry humour alight through the worst of the treatment. And carry me too, in the helpless ache of loving someone I cannot rescue. You carry Your children, Lord; carry my grandfather now, the whole way home. Amen.
A prayer for you

Watching chemo weaken your grandfather, you may wish you could shoulder it for the man who once carried you.
