Lord, my friend is grieving, and I feel helpless watching a sorrow I cannot fix. Teach me to weep with them instead of rushing them toward feeling better. Guard my mouth from easy answers and empty comfort; give me, instead, the patience to simply stay. Meet my friend in the long evenings and the unbearable firsts — the first birthday, the empty chair, the habit of turning to share news with someone no longer there. Be the comfort I am too small to be. And keep me faithful in the weeks to come, when the meals stop arriving and the world moves on but my friend still cannot. Amen.
A prayer for you
Prayer for My Friend Who Is Grieving
You cannot take their loss away. But you can refuse to let them grieve alone.
