Lord, my friend is going through chemotherapy, and there are days I genuinely wish I could take a round of it in their place, just to give them a break. Your word says there is no greater love than to lay down your life for a friend — and while I cannot lay my body down on that infusion chair for them, I can lay down my time, my comfort, my Saturdays, my pride about saying the wrong thing. So make my love that practical and that stubborn. Carry my friend through the sickness and the wearing-down. Send them small mercies on the hard days. And keep me from quietly disappearing the way people do when an illness drags on past the dramatic part — let me be the friend who is still there in month six. Greater love shows up and stays, Lord; help me love my friend like that. Amen.
A prayer for you
Prayer for My Friend During Chemotherapy
Watching a friend endure chemo, you may wish you could take a round of it for them; that impulse is love itself.
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
