Lord, my friend has been diagnosed, and I am fumbling, because I do not know the right thing to say and I am afraid of saying the wrong one. Your word remembers friends who, hearing of one man's suffering, simply got up and went to sit with him — and that is what I want to be for my friend now. Help me show up, and keep showing up, past the first rush of casseroles and cards, into the long ordinary stretch when most people have drifted back to their own lives. Carry my friend through the fear of these early days. Give the doctors wisdom and clear plans. And teach me the ministry of just being present — that I do not have to fix anything or have the answers, only to be there, steadily, for as long as this takes. Let my friend never once feel forgotten. Amen.
A prayer for you
Prayer for My Friend After a Diagnosis
When a friend is diagnosed, you may not know what to say — but showing up matters more than saying the right thing.
