Lord, the chemotherapy is grinding my father down, and it wrecks me to watch the man who fixed everything be unable to fix this — the protector who now needs protecting. If I could climb into this illness and stand in his place, I would not hesitate; but that door is shut to me. Your word says that in all their affliction You Yourself were afflicted, and the angel of Your presence saved them — so go where I cannot, into the chair and the long nights and the indignities he is too proud to name, and be afflicted there beside him. Guard the parts of him this disease wants to erase: his dry humour, his stubborn steadiness, the way he still tries to reassure me. And steady me as I watch, because nothing prepares a child to see their father brought this low. You were afflicted in their affliction, Lord; be afflicted in his — and save him. Amen.
