Lord, tomorrow my father has surgery, and everything in me wants to stand guard at the door of that operating room, though I know I cannot. Your word promises that You keep us from all evil, that You watch over our going out and our coming in — so I am asking You to keep the watch I am not able to keep. Guard my dad as he goes into that room and as he comes out of it; let Your eyes be on him every second mine cannot be. Steady the hands that operate on him. Bring him back through those doors to us. And in the waiting, hold a man who has spent his whole life looking after the rest of us and has never been easy about being the one looked after. Keep my father, Lord — his going out and his coming in — tonight, tomorrow, and after. Amen.
