Lord, my father has been diagnosed, and the man I always thought of as unbreakable suddenly is not, and I do not have a tidy prayer for that — only the psalm's cry: have mercy, for we are faint; how long? My dad has been the strong one my whole life, and it frightens me to the core to see that strength have a limit. Be merciful to him now. Meet him in the fear he will almost certainly try to hide, because that is who he is. Give his doctors skill and give us a clear way forward. And hold me in the strange grief of watching my father become someone who needs protecting. I have no neat faith to offer today, Lord — only my dad, and my anguish, laid down in front of You. Have mercy on us. Amen.
A prayer for you
Prayer for My Father After a Diagnosis
When the diagnosis is your father's, watching the strong one falter can leave you with a raw, wordless ache.
“Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am faint. LORD, heal me, for my bones are troubled. My soul is also in great anguish. But you, LORD—how long?”
