Lord, my brother has surgery tomorrow, and the two of us have never been the type to say much — so instead of fumbling for the right words, I want to pray Your blessing straight over him: may You answer my brother in this day of trouble; may the name of the God of Jacob lift him up and keep him. He has spent a lifetime being the tough one; let him be carried tomorrow without having to be strong about it. Go where I am not allowed to go, and return him to a family that will need him around for a long while yet. Settle my own nerves, too, so that I am useful rather than just anxious while we wait to hear. I do not have the words, Lord — but You do, and I am praying them over my brother: answer him, set him on high, and bring him home. Amen.
