Lord, my best friend has been diagnosed, and it has landed on me like it would if we shared blood, because somewhere along the way they became the family I chose. The old lament fits how I feel: I am distressed for you, my friend; your love to me has been wonderful. Decades of life are stitched between us, and I am not ready for any of this. Be near my best friend in the fear of these first days — the fear they will try to hide even from me. Give the doctors wisdom and our whole odd little chosen family some courage. And steady me, because I want to be strong for the person who has been strong for me through everything. I am distressed for you, my friend — so I am bringing you, and my distress, to the Lord who loves you even more than I do. Amen.
