Lord, I have survived a disaster, but surviving does not feel simple — there is rubble where my life used to be, grief for what and who is gone, and a fear that lives in my body now. Your word describes being pressed hard but not crushed, struck down but not destroyed, and that is the thread I am holding on to. Be with me in the after, which in some ways is harder than the event itself. Hold the grief that comes in waves, and the guilt of having lived when others did not. Provide shelter, food, and safety while everything is rebuilt, and patient people to help carry it. Where I keep reliving what happened, meet me in the memory rather than leaving me alone with it. I do not know how long recovery will take, or whether I will ever feel fully whole again; I am only asking You to walk it with me, one day at a time. Carry me, Lord, through the long after. Amen.
A prayer for you
Prayer for Disaster Survivors
For those who have survived a disaster and now face the after — the loss, the rubble, the trauma — here are words.
“We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair; pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed.”
