Lord, someone I love is missing, and the not-knowing is a weight I do not know how to put down — every unanswered call, every car that slows outside, every headline I am afraid to read. Hagar gave You a name when she was lost and afraid in the wilderness: the God who sees. So I carry her name into tonight — that wherever this person is, Your eyes are already upon them, even though mine cannot find them. Stay close to them this very hour. If they are afraid, be gentler to them than their fear; if they are suffering, let them not be alone in it. Steady the ones out searching the ground for them. And carry me through hours that swing without warning between hope and dread. I cannot tell what has become of them, and I am not going to pretend my heart is calm; I am asking the God who sees to watch over what is hidden from me. Be the God who sees, Lord. Amen.
