What Is a Prayer Closet (and How to Make One)
A "prayer closet" is simply a private, set-apart place to pray, drawn from Jesus' words about going into your room and shutting the door. Here is what it means and how to make one in any home.
Where the idea comes from
Jesus said that when you pray, go into your private room, shut the door, and pray to your Father who is unseen. A prayer closet takes that literally: a small, quiet, dedicated space where you can meet with God away from distraction. It does not have to be an actual closet — though for some people it is.
Choosing your spot
- A literal closet or wardrobe cleared of clutter.
- A corner of a bedroom or spare room.
- A comfy chair by a window that you reserve for prayer.
- Even a parked car or a quiet bathroom, if that is the privacy you have.
What to put in it
- A comfortable place to sit or kneel.
- Your Bible and a prayer journal.
- A prayer list of people and needs.
- Maybe a candle, soft light, or a meaningful verse on the wall.
- Tissues — honest prayer sometimes needs them.
Making it a habit
The power is not in the space itself but in showing up. Keep it simple and uncluttered, go there at a regular time, and let it become the place your heart associates with meeting God. A humble corner used daily beats a beautiful setup you rarely visit.
